Over the weekend I heard the story of one family that suffered due to the negligence of the staff and misdiagnosis by the doctors at Apollo hospital.
This family had admitted this pregnant lady to Apollo due to some complications. The learned doctors at Apollo who examined her have said that it is a result of Chikungunya and given her medication. As her condition became worse they needed to do a scan and due to the baby they could not do it. After performing a caesarean and then a subsequent scan on the mother revealed cancer to the heart, lungs, spine and spreading into the brain.
Before the lady was transferred to the Maharagama Cancer Hospital the family faced another tragedy when the other 7 year old son by accident got into the fire exit. He has been shouting and screaming from inside the fire exit and the security were of the impression that the boy is playing the fool from inside the fire exit. The boy had fallen off the stairs and fell down about 4 floors and suffered extensive brain damage. Later on at night on the same day the boy had succumbed to his injuries. Upon hearing the tragedy, the boys grandmother who is the mother of the lady who has cancer died of shock.
I do not think it is fair to fully blame hospital authorities for the death of the boy but the they should have been more vigilant when they heard the boy shouting. It baffles to think that the doctors had diagnosed complications from an advanced stage of cancer as Chikungunya. I think we should be careful and should think twice about admitting a loved one to Apollo since there have been many cases of misdiagnosis reported here.
Apollo Hospitals India is known as one of the best in the world and there is something really wrong with the Sri Lankan branch and these problems existed even when Apollo India was managing it and after the takeover by Harry Jayawardena things do not seem to have improved at this hospital.

oh my.. that sounds terrible. I too have heard stories about how things went wrong in Apollo.. But this is bad. The guards can’t be guessing when a kid is screaming like that. They should’ve looked into it….
But I guess it was a bad time for that family… I feel sorry for them. I was actually going to go there to do some check-ups and get some medication. Now I’ve second thoughts about it..
Thanks for sharing it. Coz I honestly didn’t know about it.

The only issue I see here is the problem with the security guards not responding to a call. The rest is, background information.
I understand that its a tragic event. And I feel sorry for the family. However I dont see the misdiagnosis part causing this, but of course, my expertise is not in medical sciences.

how sure are we that security actually heard the cries of the kid? usually when ur in a fire escape no one outside can hear u…i used to live at royal park and thats why no one heard the cries of yvonne as she was strangled to death…fire escape doors are damn heavy and its supposed to withstand the fire entering the fire escape…
i’m not standing up for apollo…just wondering whether it was plausible to diss the security…
just to add to the grievances of that family, the baby was apparently born with several complications and has already had a number of operations…

Yes it is totally true that Apollo Hospital at Narahenpita is bad. it is just an ordinary hospital with full of bloodless money grabbing freaks. My father had an operation done and a muscle piece and a 5cm of sural nerve were removed from his left knee for a biopsy test to be done in India. The doctor who consulted him (i still don’t want to reveal his name) recommended that these removed parts had to be ”couriered” to India via DHL. After the surgery, which cost a HUGE amount, he couldn’t even walk properly (he still cannot). They gave the muscle piece and the sural nerve piece in a formalined ordinary plastic container to be couriered to India by us. Today when we visited DHL office, they said that they do NOT courier formalined containers. Now my parents are on the way to the hospital just to see what has to be done next. I still don’t know whether there’s an alternative way of sending the containers to India besides courier. People, this is how Apollo’s irresponsible doctors make money for ”their” organization. They didn’t even have a doubt whether the formalined containers could be sent via courier prior to the surgery. Now we are helpless not knowing what to do. Anyway, this is what happened just now. There may be a solution for this from the hospital. IF they give us a solution for this, i will let you know what that is. I hope that will be a positive response. People, we should get together to beat these money grabbing mafia organizations. Any of you have had a bad experience with this hospital? What is that? Please let the whole world know about it…..

I think the story is a bit misleading. Worse things have happened to people at Nawaloka and other hospital. Just ask the chairman of AMW.

I really feel very sorry for what happend to the family. The son and the grandmother would have been still alive if the security did their job properly. They are paid for that only. Now who is responsible for all this….?
I just opend the web site of appolo to find a good physician to make an appointment, but after reading what happend to this family, I will not contact appolo.

My deepest sympathies for the people who have sufferred due to negligence of the Doctors at Appollo Hospital. My mother dies at this hospital due to sheer negligence of one Lady Doctor who should not be there at all. I do not know whether she is a Doctor in the first place but she acted in the absence of her husband who is a Doctor, who was looking after my mother. In fact, he has been doing so for some time and my mother was in and out of the hospital, costing huge amount of money each time. Last time when she was admitted in July 2008, she was administered Insulin to control her diabetese and she went in to a coma. The lady Doctor who was looking after her at thst time did not know that a sugar level of 80 was too low. My mother could not eat at that time due to some other illness and my family members who had been there at the time, had to tell the nurses to give my mother some dextrose. However, it was too late and she went in to a coma and suffered several days in ICU. Although we transferred her to another hospital to save her life, it was too late. If it was my choice, I would never have continued treating my mother at Apollo as WE ALL KNOW that it is a big chance you take, at a very high cost. I was helpless as I was not the one who was looking after my mother. I will not sight this hospital again and will not advice or encourage anyone to go there either.

Fist of all i would like to make you understand that there are notice boards inside apollo to inform visitors that kids are not allowed as visitors..But still patient’s are fighting with security guards and staff to take their kids in..not only that some times they do keep their kids inside wards and rooms for few days…do understand that if mother is not well, kid can not stay alone..if so private attendant has to take care of the kid…..Nurses and housekeeping or security guards are always busy with their work..they are not responsible….
